We had a good practice tonight followed by another strong scrimmage. At practice, we worked on the 2-3 zone defense, and I reminded the kids to stay within the 3-point arc, as it is a league rule that offensive players cannot be guarded outside the arc.
We also started working on some offense plays - which I've named the "Kemba", the "Jaylen" and the "Tacko" - after some popular Celtics players. These are some basic plays that should be effective. The Kemba is a play where the ballhandler, at the top of the key, drives to the hoop when his teammates clear out - essentially giving the ballhandler a "1 on 1" opportunity. If the defense collapses on the ballhandler, they can kick it out to any of their teammates who should be open. The Jaylen (sometimes referred to as the Box 1) is an inbounding play on the offensive end where the players set picks for each other horizontally to hopefully free up a player underneath the hoop for an easy basket. The Tacko (sometimes referred to as the Box 2) is the same idea, except the players move vertically. These plays are a work in progress! We will continue to work on them each week.
Because some of the players were missing tonight, we can go over these plays before the game on Saturday. This Saturday's game, vs. team Sackos, is at 8 AM at the Middle School North building. Please arrive at 7:45 so we can prepare for the gameand warm up a bit. Please make sure your player comes with a water bottle.
A friendly reminder - please let me know in advance if your player is going to miss a practice or game. My phone number is 978-852-7053.
See you on Saturday!
